The Taurachbahn railway in Mauterndorf
Ideal children's programme for your holiday in Salzburg
The Taurachbahn railway is named after the "Taurach" river that flows from the Radstädter Tauern through Lungau. This museum railway offers you a great bit of variety on your family holiday and is a perfect children's programme for a day trip in Salzburg.
In the historical town of Mauterndorf you have the chance to travel by steam train through wonderful scenery. Every fan of the outdoors gets their money's worth on a summer holiday in Mauterndorf. You travel through mystical forests, over lush green pastures and alongside you can always see the Taurach, the river that accompanies you through Lungau.
From Mauterndorf to St. Andrä
The journey starts at the historical train station in Mauterndorf. The train station is just a few minutes' walk from Hotel Binggl. Here you can find out what passenger transport was like 100 years ago. Then you set off by steam train and passenger car. The locomotive huffs and puffs, steam rises and you hear the train's whistle. The locomotive set slowly pushes itself over the old tracks. Once the train is moving you can hear the relaxing clickety-clack that the train makes as it travels over the tracks. You can feel the power behind such a colossus.
Stop in Mariapfarr
You head to the first stop, the train station in Mariapfarr, through idyllic sections of forests and open fields. Everywhere children are looking out of the windows with great excitement waiting to see what the train conductor does. Then the Taurachbahn train starts moving again. It continues over a bridge that crosses the Taurach river. The Taurach flows from Obertauern through Lungau before merging with the Mur in Tamsweg.
There is then a longer stop in St. Andrä. Here you can find a large children's playground where there's everything a children's heart might desire. Along the route you also see several of Lungau's sights time and time again. The Taurachbahn train continues on a bit further without passengers to turn the steam train round. Once this is done, it returns to Mauterndorf.
