Sightseeing & excursions in Salzburger Land

Discover the sights of Lungau

The Lungau holiday region offers wonderful hiking paths, mountain bike trails and idyllic alpine lakes. And there's  much more worth seeing in one of the most beautiful holiday locations in Austria.

From the Taurach railway in Mauterndorf to the castles and palaces of Lungau, the Landscape Museum or Prebersee Lake, unforgettable experiences await everyone in Lungau. In the heart of the region, the Hotel Binggl in Mauterndorf makes the perfect starting point to discover all the sights. And we're happy to share our tips on finding the right mix of activities for your holiday in Salzburg.

Fortresses, castles and the Taurach railway

Drive over the Radstadt Tauern in Lungau, and eventually, you'll come to Mauterndorf, where you can't miss the imposing Mauterndorf Castle. Visitors can discover castle life as it used to be here.

The castle is also home to the Lungau Country Museum, providing insights into the Lungau region, life here in times gone by, and the local flora and fauna.

Mauterndorf Castle is just a few minutes walk from Hotel Binggl, as is the Taurach Railway, a steam railway run by the museum in Mauterndorf.

Hochofenmuseum and Silbergwerk

Hundreds of years ago, ore was mined in the Lungau region. Today, there are only a few historical sites to remind us of this past, like the Hochofenmuseum in Bundschuh, where iron ore was once processed. Today the museum brings the story of the iron ore industry to life.

The region is also home to the silver mine in Ramingstein, which is typical of this era and offers guided tours of the mine tunnel. Experiencing the history of this region up close is especially memorable for children and teens.

Preber lake, Rieding valley and Weisspriach

Besides adventures in the Lungau Biosphere Reserve, there are plenty of opportunities for relaxing sightseeing around the Salzburg region during your stay.

Try a walk around the Prebersee in Tamsweg: everyone falls in love with this mountain lake and its tranquil setting.

Then there's hiking in the Rieding Valley and Weisspriach Valley, where you'll find nature at its most pristine and restful.

If you're looking for a place to start hiking, you'll find that Salzburg's Lungau region more than delivers.
